The same problem exists in Cat Quest where an intended fashion is tough to maintain since earlier equipment is discarded in favour of newer equipment because of the increase in stats. One example of this is in Final Fantasy 7 Remake where players are conflicted to swap out the Buster Sword for other swords with better stats since the Buster Sword is an iconic pairing with Cloud Strife. However, with more games allowing players to aesthetically change the costumes and weapons of characters, it becomes increasingly frustrating to maintain the best look for a character while optimising the best stats since often times the choice of fashion will not yield the desired stats. This framework has persisted and is still used in many games today. To better differentiate the varying stats, equipment with better stats would look more fancy and shiny. In the past, equipment was mainly sought to improve abilities, and changing equipment does not change your character aesthetically. Traditionally, RPG games would have stats within equipment. However, with every new release, developers need to sprinkle something new in order to prevent a series from becoming stagnant. There is a joy in its simplicity that makes it stand out from the other beefy RPGs. Personally, the games remind me of the Knights of Pen & Paper where common RPG tropes are condensed to their core essence. Having played Cat Quest 1 and 2, I enjoyed my time with the series. A highlight of the game is its overworld where you can interact with characters and start a myriad of quests. Its art style and writing is great, its quality is consistent and its gameplay is easy to pick up. It is a light-hearted open-world adventure loved for its simplicity and puns-filled humour.
